02The Rise: From Infamous Syndicate to DTP

A Chicago duo before anybody knew her name

Long before the DTP chain, Shawnna was half of Infamous Syndicate, the Chicago rap duo she formed in the late 1990s with Lateefa “Teefa” Harland. Their album Changing the Game arrived in 1999 and did not make her famous. What it did do was establish her as a technically serious MC in a city that, at the time, had almost no national rap infrastructure to speak of. Chicago’s big hip-hop moment was still years away.

The Ludacris connection

Everything changed with a guest verse. 03Stepping Away from the Major Label Machine

In October 2009, roughly a decade into her relationship with DTP, she walked away from Battle of the Sexes, a collaborative album with Ludacris that had been in the works. 04The Guy Family Name

You can’t tell this story without Buddy Guy. Shawnna is the daughter of the Chicago blues guitarist whose influence runs through basically every rock and blues player of the last sixty years — and who, at 90, is still touring. He announced a slate of 2026 dates around his 90th birthday and won another Grammy earlier this year for Ain’t Done With the Blues, bringing his career total into the nines. In July 2025 the label put out Run It Back, a nine-track collaborative project with Chicago rapper LSTREETZ, who is signed to the imprint. The Source covered the release on July 28, 2025, noting that the album included a guest appearance from Twista and arrived first through the direct-to-fan platform EVEN before hitting streaming services. The lead single “Counterfeit,” produced by Churchboy Scotty, came with a video reportedly inspired by Thelma & Louise.

The pattern has held into this year. In June 2026, LSTREETZ released “Cases” featuring Shawnna, another Guy Entertainment Group record, and her name has continued to show up on independent Chicago collaborations through 2026, including work with local artist Chris Crack. Then in February 2026, the crew actually worked together again. Ludacris, Chingy, Shawnna, I-20 and DJ Infamous all appeared in a Frank’s RedHot commercial that ran around the Super Bowl, followed by behind-the-scenes footage of the group roasting each other — Shawnna reportedly caught it for always running late. Still very much online, still very much Chicago

She’s active on Instagram as @shawnnaworldwide, where she has north of 400,000 followers, posts freestyles, and promotes label releases and Chicago events. She’s on X as @shawnnamusic. What you won’t find is a big arena tour or a major-label deal — as of this writing, the major ticketing services don’t list upcoming Shawnna dates. She turns up at Chicago shows and rooms where she’s wanted, and she goes home.
